Presentation

The Commune of Maroua III is one of 3 arrondissement communes in the city of Maroua, the capital of Cameroon's Far North Region. This commune was created in 2007 when the city of Maroua was divided up administratively. It now covers an area of around 32 km², with an estimated population of around 150,000, giving a density of around 4,688 inhabitants per km².

The Commune of Maroua III is located at coordinates 10.5953°N and 14.3247°E.

It is bounded to the north by the Commune of Maroua I, to the south by the Commune of Meri, to the east by the Commune of Maroua II and to the west by the Commune of Petté.

The town of Maroua is located around 1,200 km from Yaoundé, the capital of Cameroon, and more than 150 km from the border with Nigeria. The town's strategic location lies in the fact that it is situated in a Sahelian zone, with a dry climate and natural resource management issues. It is home to several important educational, administrative and religious infrastructures, and is a crossroads between several towns in Cameroon's far north, such as Mokolo, Kousseri, Mora and Yagoua.

The Commune of Maroua III is located at an average altitude of around 400 metres.

Responsibilities of the Commune of Maroua III

Maroua III Town Council is responsible for :

1° Basic education: Participation in the maintenance and administration of basic education establishments;

2° Vocational training: Participation in the maintenance and administration of vocational training centres;

3° Urban planning and roads: Urban planning, creation and maintenance of earth roads;

4° Tourism: Development and operation of tourist sites of local interest;

5° Leisure and holidays: Organisation of holiday activities ;

6° Public health: Participation in the management of basic health centres;

7° Rural development: Promoting local rural and agricultural development ;

8° Environment : Environmental protection and waste management ;

9° Social action: Social aid and assistance for vulnerable groups ;

10° Local economic development: Promotion of local economic activities.
